Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had abandoned the family, and so she was fostered by her mother grandma and godparents. When she was a young girl she was suffering from an obsessive compulsive disorder and suffered anxiety linked to the word association. Ford was interested in acting during her teenaged years, and joined the National Youth Theatre. She was admitted to Sylvia Young Theatre School but after one week decided she wasn't a good fit. Ford reapplied to Central School of Speech and Drama and on the fourth time she applied she was accepted. One of her classmates included Shaun Dingwall, who would play a part as Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford didn't complete her degree in 1993. However, in 1991, Ford had made her first television appearance on the show Surgical Spirit. At that point, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate began her TV debut in 1991and appeared on television shows like The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. and London's Burning. Alongside her usual stage work, Tate was a part of in the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. Tate was first noticed because of her stand-up comedic performances in the year 1996.
